HEARTGARD for is an oral chewable for use in dogs and puppies and for cats and kittens as a heartworm preventive. HEARTGARD chewables contain Ivermectin, which works to kill the immature form of heartworms. It is effective against larval heartworms (the microfilariae that circulate in the blood) but not against adult heartworms. Heartworm is not typical in cats and is more commonly infectious in dogs. In cats, when the heartworm larvae develop in the heart, it is likely to move to other parts of the body.
HEARTGARD for Dogs (Blue, Green & Brown) should be administered on a monthly basis. HEARTGARD chewable tablets must be chewed. They should not be swallowed whole. Make sure that your dog gets the entire dose. For dogs that normally swallow whole, the chewable tablets can be broken into pieces.
Ivermectin should not be used in combination with spinosad (Comfortis) as the potential for ivermectin side effects will be increased. Ivermectin should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug and should be used with caution in collie breeds or collie mixed breeds due to potential toxic effects. Dogs should be tested for heartworms prior to starting a heartworm prevention. It is approved for use in puppies as young as 6 weeks, small dogs regardless of weight, and in pregnant or lactating females.
Note: For additional protection against roundworms and hookworms for Dogs, try HEARTGARD PLUS Chewables.
